Before she ever hit the stage, you could feel it in the air: something special was about to happen.
At the 28th Annual Joe Douglas Old School & Blues Festival, all eyes were on the stage as the Alabama heat gave way to a night soaked in soul, nostalgia, and the kind of timeless magic only a true legend can bring. And when LaTocha stepped into the spotlight, draped in grace, power, and purpose, it was more than a performance.
It was a reminder: She still has it. She never lost it.
As one of the founding members of the iconic R&B group Xscape, LaTocha’s voice helped define a generation. Songs like “Understanding”, “Who Can I Run To”, and “Just Kickin’ It” was more than chart-toppers; they were soundtracks for love, heartbreak, and everything in between. Her tone was unmistakable. Her presence, unforgettable.
And on this rare summer night, she reminded the world why.

Sharing the stage with music greats like Big Daddy Kane, The Isley Brothers, and Midnight Star, LaTocha held her own, and then some. Her crisp, soulful vocals cut through the evening air with the same emotional weight they carried in the '90s, now laced with the wisdom of a woman who has grown, evolved, and emerged even stronger.
The moment wasn’t just about music; it was about legacy.
In a world that often rushes to the next big thing, there’s something sacred about witnessing someone reclaim their own narrative. There’s something powerful about a woman saying, “I’m still here, and I’m still becoming.”
LaTocha’s resurgence didn’t start at this performance. Earlier this year, her intimate interview with Vault Empowers, hosted by Brandy Harvey, offered a raw look into her journey, not just as an artist but as a woman navigating fame, identity, faith, and reinvention.
Then came the viral moment. In early 2025, LaTocha’s cover of Chris Brown’s “Residuals” took social media by storm. Fans were captivated by the flawless execution, her effortless control, and the way she made the track entirely her own. For some, it was a discovery. For many of us, it was a beautiful reminder of what’s always been there.
In March, she was honored by Lenox & Parker Magazine as their Women’s History Month cover star, further solidifying her place not just in music history but in the culture at large.

When she’s not behind the mic, LaTocha is building. Through Made Girl Music and Made Girl Media, she’s creating platforms that empower emerging artists to find their voice and keep their power. It’s a natural evolution for a woman who knows firsthand the cost of visibility and the value of owning your story.
“Made Girl” isn’t just branding. It’s a declaration. One that says: I’ve been refined, not ruined. I’ve been challenged, not changed. And I’m walking boldly into what’s next.
If her performance was a love letter to the past, her upcoming single, “Love Changes,” is a fresh chapter for the future. Slated to release on June 13, the track promises to deliver everything fans love about LaTocha: emotional depth, vocal richness, and that signature blend of gospel-rooted soul and contemporary R&B.
She’s not chasing trends. She’s honoring her gift. And in doing so, she’s giving us all permission to do the same.
There’s something beautifully full-circle about LaTocha’s moment. She came of age at a time when Black women were rarely allowed to be complex in public. Yet here she is, decades later, standing in her softness, her strength, and her sound.
She’s not just making music. She’s making space. For herself. For other women. For every version of who she’s been.
And for those of us watching, it’s not just inspiring, it’s empowering.
Because if LaTocha can rise again, so can we.
