When the Bill Isn’t Beautiful - What We Need to Know About the “One Big Beautiful Bill”

Let’s talk—not from fear, but from faith.
Not to panic, but to prepare.
Because something major just happened in our country, and while it’s being marketed as “The One Big Beautiful Bill,” we need to pause and ask: Beautiful for who?
On July 4, 2025, while many celebrated a holiday symbolizing freedom, President Trump officially signed into law a bill that could leave an estimated 12 to 13 million Americans without health insurance by 2034. It’s being celebrated by some as a patriotic win. But for others—it’s a devastating reality.

This bill doesn’t just make headlines. It makes history. And not the kind we’ll want to look back on.
Recently passed by Congress and now signed into law, the 900-page “Big Beautiful Bill” is being framed as a victory—tax cuts, economic relief, a win for workers. But when you take a deeper look, the details reveal something else: a sweeping shift in who gets access, who gets support, and who gets left behind.
As a Black woman, a believer, a mother, and a member of a community that spans cultures and generations, I feel it in my spirit—we need to talk about this.

What’s really in this bill?
It’s complicated, but here’s the truth in plain language:
✅ Yes, some will see tax relief—especially high earners and business owners.
❌ But it comes at a cost: Medicaid, SNAP (food assistance), and other vital programs are being tied to tighter restrictions, putting millions at risk.
🧾 Clean energy incentives are being stripped back.
💣 Military and border enforcement spending are skyrocketing.
⚖️ Judicial oversight and AI regulations are being rolled back, raising real concerns about unchecked power.
In other words—it’s the kind of “beautiful” that looks good on paper but harms the people already fighting to survive.
That includes our sisters raising babies alone.
Our parents relying on medication and monthly SNAP assistance.
Immigrant families working two and three jobs just to stay afloat.
That includes us—if not directly, then spiritually.
Because if our freedom only works for some, then it’s not freedom.
If a bill benefits the powerful while stripping the safety net from the struggling, then it’s not beautiful.
It’s broken.

Our oppression may wear different faces, but the system that created it? It’s the same.
The erasure? The surveillance? The forced displacement? It’s the same.
The trauma passed down to our children? It’s the same.
So today, I’m not here with answers. I’m not writing this to go viral. I’m not offering 5 ways to fix this.
I’m simply here to say:
I see you.
I feel this with you.
And I love you.

But here’s the Becoming Her truth:
We were never meant to rely solely on systems.
We rely on God.
We rely on community.
We rely on truth.
And truth says: we can’t afford to sit this one out.
We don’t need to be political experts to care.
We don’t need a degree in economics to recognize injustice.
We just need our discernment. Our voices. Our love for our neighbor.
Because when healthcare becomes a privilege…
When food becomes conditional…
When protection and policy are offered to some and denied to others…

It’s time to stop scrolling and start standing.
This is about more than politics—it’s about people. It’s about protecting dignity. It’s about refusing to build a future where we must beg for basic needs while calling it progress.
So, what can we do?
Stay informed.
Talk to each other.
Hold our elected officials accountable.
Pray—but also prepare.
Give where we can.
Organize.
See the bigger picture—and still believe in our power to shape it.
You are not powerless.
You are part of this story.
